We write what we know – sometimes, the stuff we wish we didn’t know. Sometimes it hurts, and that’s why we have to write it. Sometimes, you feel awful just for writing it, like bringing it to the light is some sort of betrayal of things that should remain unsaid, unseen.
We write to excise our ghosts, our regrets, our what-might-have-beens. Our terror at how close we might’ve come to stepping into another world which is not as warm and loving as this one.
And when you can take what you’ve written, a reflection of those
things you wish you had never had to live through – because real-life terrors are so much worse than anything we can simply imagine – and open yourself up by handing that work over to someone else and saying, “Please, feel this pain of mine and make it your own,” and what comes back to you is so sharp and perfect that it rips you open?
That’s when you know you’ve found a
