little over a year since I carved
out this space on the web specifically as my “Author” site, buoyed on by the fact that Crucible had won a contest and I might be able to start thinking of myself as a proper writer, not just someone who talked about wanting to be a writer. At first it seemed a tad pretentious, like getting one semi-pro story success under my belt was enough to warrant devoting all my web presence to my impression of myself as a writer.
Well, all good things take time. On those rare occasions when I post here, I’ve been saying how all my spare time, what little I have of it around being a dad and husband and homeowner and, God forbid, an employee, is spent writing, and in particular I’ve been focused on short fiction and the short fiction markets. I’ve been soaking up a LOT of short fiction over the last three or four years, and I’d like to think that some of the skill and talent I’ve been marinating my creative juices in has got down into the fibre of whatever organ it is that my writing comes from. That organ has certainly been busy in the past twelve months.
I’m awfully pleased to say that the effort has paid off. A short story that I wrote last year, entitled Paint by Numbers, has been accepted by Australian SFF publication Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine, and will appear in Issue #55. ASIM is an award-winning magazine, highly respected in the Antipodean SFF community and no doubt wherever good fiction is enjoyed, and I’m honoured to be in such good company for my first ever print publication.
There may be champagne, or at least something cold and fizzy, cracked open in the Rabarts house the day it hits the magazine rack.
So as not to spoil the story, I won’t write
any more about Paint by Numbers here. What I will say is that my quest for world domination efforts to get more of my works into print continue apace, and I currently have five stories submitted to various venues around the internet and a raft of stories either complete or in progress on my hard drive, so if all goes well posts like this will become more frequent in coming months. Of course, I know I shouldn’t go saying things like that…
